Alex Raúl holds a master’s degree in Law, and worked in refugee law for several years. He autonomously developed his practice as a composer, filmmaker and audiovisual artist, which he now fully dedicates his time to.
In 2019 he debuted with the album ‘The Fantastic Fix’, a sizzling stew of experimental R&B and electronic blues. He has since composed music for film, tv, and theatre.
In 2023 he directed and composed CAVES, an animated VR-experience of an immersive choir performance. The work premiered at Opera Forward Festival ’23 in Amsterdam, and was selected for the Gouden Kalf Award Competition at Nederlands Film Festival ’23. The experience has since toured internationally [Ottawa International Animation Festival ’23, Athens Digital Arts Festival ’23, CutOut Fest Mexico ’23].
His short dance film ‘As the Call, So the Echo’ premiered at Cinedans FEST ’24, at EYE Film Institute in Amsterdam. The film stars choreographer and dancer Nicole Ishimaru, and was directed and composed for by Alex Raúl.
In 2024 he curated the immersive art exhibition ‘The Known/The Strange’, in Felix Meritis, Amsterdam.
Alex Raúl is currently working on a new studio album, a short film, and an immersive audiovisual installation, set for 2025.
